what is the name of that traditional chinese medicine remedy (dried orange skin) for soare throat in winter?

by admin on October 26, 2009

When I was living in Taiwan, I picked up some good habit from the people I was living with, including chinese medicine remedies. One was to eat some bitter/sour orange like dried skins (sold in blisters) in winter. I believe it could be kumquat skins. Now that I am back i don’t know the name and cannot find them here. Hence I need a little help with a correct ID.

For the usage of dried tangerine peel (陳皮 Chen-Pi) in traditional Chinese medicine: it helps on digestion and eases coughing and vomiting.

For the usage of dried kumquat (金桔 Jin-Ju) in traditional Chinese medicine: it helps dissolve phlegm, and helps recover from being drunk.

One of the most popular ready made traditional Chinese remedy that people in Taiwan take for ease of coughing is "Pi- Pa-Gao". Here is the wiki page in traditional Chinese language, you can take a look at the picture, and look it up in U.S. Asian supermarket.

But if you already have sore throat, you probably want to use western medicine to stop the inflammation. In this case, aspirin could work better.

Bitter orange peel (Chen Pi) is not typically used in Chinese Medicine for sore throat.

I think you were either misinformed, or misunderstood.
